Akanimoh is a successful handsome young man who has
everything he's ever wanted but for one thing which is important in the life of
every man, love. In a bid to find love, he's audacious and carefree bearing in mind
it's now or never.
He's chanced to meet Idorenyin a beauty he couldn't
resist, or maybe he could, but he's desperation wouldn't let him. They become
friends and assumes they'd tie the knot only for his heart to be shredded and
his assumptions chocked back into his now slippery mouth. As fate would have
it, Emem whom he had given a blind eye (for reasons known to him as would any
man) finally finds favor in his sight and gets a dinner invitation. As any
intelligent woman (not like they all ain't) can smell a man's desire and
loneliness a mile away, Emem was beautifully developed to wear such wit. She
declared her love for him which sure did surprise him. At work, they kept their
love official so as to avoid prying eyes and prickling ears, then Akan was forced
to reply her love and as most men foolishly do, he only cared but didn't love
her for his heart was still with Idorenyin who apparently is now distant away
with another man.
Months after a tearful revelation, Akan is back to
where he began. As fate would have it, she comes back knocking at his door. Ido
was back to declare her love for him for the man whom had promised to take her
to the alter lied as most men do.
Written in a simple to understand dictions,
"Assumption" has an interesting theme which as the title suggests,
how wrongly we assume and conclude in our hearts when reality is actually a far
cry from it. This story sheds light on the saying "First love is the
sweetest but the first cut is the deepest." It's not every time our first
love returns to us, but in this case, Nseyen .S. Bassey tells us a compelling
short story of love and its roller coaster ride.
