I hate to burst bubbles, much so when it involves such a sensitive matter as young girls who have been missing for over a year and in the hands of the most ruthless of men.
Yet I have to say this as plain and simple as it helps. The news and social media is crawling with the seemingly good or even great news of "Change" that the #BringBackOurGirls campaigners have been able to secure a meeting date -July 8- with President Buhari. That is not bad, as matter of fact, it helps the campaign as it puts more public attention on the ongoing struggle. But that is about all it does.
The notion as being sold by Mrs Oby Ezekwesili that the meeting will help hasting the return of the girls by sharing ideas on how to wrestle them from their islamist captors is fantasy at best and blatant lie at worst.
It will be demeaning to the Presidency to insinuate that Buhari is sitting around in the Villa waiting for Mrs Ezekwesili to come tell him how to bring back the girls on the 8th of June.
Walking and parading the streets of Abuja for over a year in protest does not all of a sudden make one an expert in rescuing abductees in the jungle from the hands of mean terrorists.
The meeting with the president will not be to discuss ways of rescuing the girls and should not be. There are other roles the Bring Back Our Girls group will play as a pressure group, suggesting to the Commander-in-Chief of the armed forces how a military operation will go isn't one of them. That is what our military chiefs and National Security Adviser is for.
Holding a meeting with the campaigners is cool but it serves no purpose that concerns the return of the girls.
If the Joint Chiefs and all our National Intelligence can't find a way, there is nothing any street campaigner can do about it.
President Jonathan could have had a thousand meetings with Ezekwesili and her comrades and the Chibok girls will still be missing.
Jonathan did not need to meet with Ezekwesili before he secured the return of over a thousand girls and women from Boko Haram camp, all he needed was a regional collaboration with The Chad Basin neighbors. This route is the same President Buhari is wisely taking and the the agreed meeting with the #BringBackOurGirls campaigners is nothing but a smile for the cameras.
